Pepo anayerudi (A returning spirit)
A returning spirit (also known as revenant in French and Wiedergänger in German) is the visible spirit of a dead person who was wicked, vain
or a non-believer, that is believed to return from the grave to terrorize the
living; though later legend and folklore depict revenants as returning
for a specific purpose (e.g. revenge against the deceased’s killer). In most
medieval accounts they return to harass their surviving families and
neighbours, and may spread disease among the living.
The German version of a returning spirit is an animated corpse, like a zombie, that has returned to the world of the
living. They usually cause problems and frighten living people. They exist
either to avenge some injustice they experienced while alive, or because their
soul is not ready to be released, as a consequence of their former way of life.
