mabadiliko (transformation)

kubadili (v.t. to change)
kubadilika (v.i. to change [of its own accord]; to transform; to mutate)
kubadilisha (v.t. to [cause to] change; to transform; to mutate; to alter)
kujibadilisha (ref. to transform oneself)

For example, the man changed his son's name to Abraham.

mabadiliko (changes; alterations; transformation)

mabadiliko ya chembe za urithi (mutation; lit. changes of the genetic cells)
mabadiliko jeni (gene mutation; lit. gene changes)
aliyebadilika-jeni (mutant; lit. one who changed by [his] genes)

Mutant is a word that refers to a creature whose genetic cells have changed. For example, a mutant lobster can have a blue color instead of having its natural red color.

mwenye jeni-X (a Marvel mutant; lit. a possessor of the X-gene)
kioja (an oddity; an anomaly; something marvellous; something astonishing)

aliyebadilishwa-jeni (a mutate; lit. one whose genes were changed / one who was changed by the genes)
kiumbe mwenye uwezo unaozidi ule wa wanadamu (a superhuman; lit. a creature with abilities that exceed those of humans)
nguvu zinazozidi zile za wanadamu (superhuman powers; lit. powers that exceed those of humans)
asiyebinadamu (an inhuman)
taifa la chini (sub-race)
kurithiwa (to be inherited)

However, a Marvel mutant is a type of mutant who appears in science fiction comics, such as The X-Men, and who is born with the X-gene which causes this mutation of theirs. In the Marvel Comics universe, the term mutate refers to a creature whose genetic cells have been changed to become superhuman, as opposed to mutants, inhumans and other sub-races of humanity whose genetic alterations are inherited.

mageuzi ya spishi (evolution)
dubwana la mfukoni (pocket monster)
metamofosisi (metamorphosis)
takwimu (statistic)
tajriba (experience)

Evolution of a pocket monster is a sudden change in form which is more akin to a metamorphosis than actual evolution accompanied by an increase in statistical values; this only can occur once the creature has gained enough experience points.

mbadilisha-umbo (shape-shifter)
kugeuza (v.t. to change)
kugeuka kuwa (to turn into)

Shape-shifters are creatures with the ability to transform and change their shape into other people, animals and other objects. The most famous shape-shifter is Mystique from the X-Men.

Pepo Anayerudi (Returning Spirit)

Pepo anayerudi (A returning spirit)

A returning spirit (also known as revenant in French and Wiedergänger in German) is the visible spirit of a dead person who was wicked, vain or a non-believer, that is believed to return from the grave to terrorize the living; though later legend and folklore depict revenants as returning for a specific purpose (e.g. revenge against the deceased’s killer). In most medieval accounts they return to harass their surviving families and neighbours, and may spread disease among the living.

The German version of a returning spirit is an animated corpse, like a zombie, that has returned to the world of the living. They usually cause problems and frighten living people. They exist either to avenge some injustice they experienced while alive, or because their soul is not ready to be released, as a consequence of their former way of life.

Golemu (The Golem)

Golemu (Golem)

A golem is an animated anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore, created entirely from inanimate matter, such as clay or severed pieces of corpses like Frankenstein’s monster. The first golem was created by a Czech rabbi in Prague in order to defend his ghetto from anti-Semitic attacks and riots. Under the rule of Rudolph II, the Holy Roman Emperor at the time, Jews were killed or expelled from Prague. So, the rabbi brought the golem to life through Hebrew rituals and incantations. The golem turned terribly violent, killing gentiles and spreading fear. The Emperor promised to stop the persecution of the Jews, so the rabbi deactivated the golem by rubbing out the first two letters of “undead” on its forehead, leaving the word “dead”. The golem was stored in the attic of the Old New Synagogue where it would be restored to life again if ever needed.

Majinamizi ya Usiku (Nightmares)

Jinamizi (Mare)

Mare, or nightmare, is an evil imp in Germanic folklore which rides on sleeping people’s chests, bringing on bad dreams. The mare is attested as early as the 13th century in the Norse Yngling saga. The mare is similar to the mythical incubus and succubus, and was likely inspired by sleep paralysis. The mares were also believed to ride horses, which left them exhausted and covered in sweat by the morning. It could also entangle the hair of the sleeping person or beast, resulting in mare-braids and probably the explanation to the Polish plait phenomenon, a hair disease.

Kambioni (Cambions)

Kambioni (Cambion)

A cambion is a term used to refer to the half-human offspring of the union between an incubus and a human woman. The most famous legend of such a case includes that of Merlin, the famous wizard from Arthurian legend. According to the “Witch’s Hammer” written by Heinrich Kramer in 1486 (succubi and incubi are the same demon, able to switch between male and female forms). Once the succubus collects the semen from the men she sleeps with, she then transforms into an incubus to use that seed to impregnate women, thus explaining how these demons could apparently sire children despite the traditional belief that they were incapable of reproduction. In Viking lore the child is born deformed and more susceptible to supernatural influences because the conception was unnatural.

Mumiani (Mummies)

A mummy is a human or animal corpse, whose skin and organs have been preserved by embalming. Mummies are wrapped in bandages from head to toe and are kept in sarcophagi either in temples or pyramids. In the case of pharaohs, before their entombment, they are usually sealed with a hex by the head magician to ward off or curse anyone who may disturb the pharaoh’s eternal slumber. When a pharaoh’s tomb has been disturbed (most often by archaeologists and grave-robbers), it can awaken the mummy that cannot be put to rest until the curse is broken, generally by reading an inscription carved on the side of the sarcophagus or the tomb’s walls, or even a scroll that contains the counter-spell. If not stopped, mummies will forever walk the Earth, putting curses on anyone who crosses their path, turning them into voodoo dolls or other small artifacts.

Maiti-Warukarukaji (Hopping Corpses)

Maiti-mrukarukaji (Hopping corpse)

In Chinese legend, hopping-corpses hide in dark places such as caves during the day. At night, they move around by hopping with their arms permanently outstretched. It is believed that the hopping-corpse is so stiff, that it cannot bend its limbs and body, so it has to move around by hopping while keeping its arms extended for mobility. A peculiar feature is its greenish-white skin due to fungus or mold growing on the corpse and its long razor-sharp claws. They are blind, and may be evaded by holding one’s breath, as they track living creatures by detecting their breathing. A hopping-corpse can be put to sleep by pinning on their forehead a piece of a yellow scroll, called a ward-paper or Chinese talisman, with a spell written on it.

Vibwengo (Elves)

Kibwengo (Elf)
Tolkien.

An elf is a type of supernatural being, prominently featuring in traditional British and Scandinavian folklore. They usually have magical powers and are capricious and mischievous in human affairs. The word “elves” is sometimes used as a general term for fairies. Elves are depicted as youths who stop growth at puberty and never age thereafter. Elves vary in size from 4’10” to 5’8”. At a glance, it is hard to discern an elf’s sex. Both sexes have big expressive eyes, pointy ears and the males lack facial hair. As elves get older they get wiser and their senses become sharper. Elves can live from 100 to over 1000 years. In Swahili folklore, the elf is an evil diminutive sea-spirit that is believed to play with fishermen who are fishing at night. The first orthographic standard for writing Elven languages was constructed in the early 1900s by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Christmas elves are a subspecies of elves with dwarfism located in the Arctic regions, mainly in the North Pole. They make toys in a workshop as Santa Claus’s helpers. They have pointy ears and wear green and red, and are no taller than dwarfs.

During the course of time, elves have moved to other places in the world and as the tribes separated, they gained other features by adapting to their local surroundings. Light elves are peaceful, nature-loving creatures with starry eyes, faces brighter than the sun and golden hair; they live in sunny forests and wooded lakes. Whereas, the dark elves are dark-skinned with fluorescent eyes and practice black magic; they live in deep dark underground caves.

Mizuka (Ghosts)

Mzuka (Ghost)

A ghost is a disembodied spirit of a dead person in a shadowy or evanescent form and haunts particular locations, objects or even people they were associated with in life. They are depicted as an invisible to translucent presence or as barely visible wispy amorphous shapes floating in the air like astral dust. The deliberate attempt to contact spirits is known as necromancy, or in spiritism as mediumship through a séance.

Vizuka (Phantoms)

Kizuka (Phantom)

A phantom in traditional belief is a physical manifestation of the soul of a deceased person that wanders among the living. Unlike the ghost, phantoms most closely resemble the living. Most often they are not even suspected of being a ghost until they perform eerie feats, such as walking through a wall or vanishing into thin air.

Vivuli vya Wazima (Wraiths)

Kivuli cha mzima (Wraith; lit.: Shadow of the living)

A wraith is a visible apparition of a living person supposed to portend, or presage his death, as an omen does. It only comes to those who cheat death. One way to evade this spirit is to survive until midnight after one’s near-death experience.

Vivuli (Apparitions)

Kivuli (Apparition)

An apparition is a visual manifestation of spirit activity, especially a ghost. The apparition may also be an illusory appearance of a person or object as a dream image, mirage or optical illusion.

A specter is a visible incorporeal spirit of a recently-deceased person who died with vengeance in his heart and will come back to take revenge by haunting, or even killing, the ones responsible for this vendetta.

Pepo Waliofungiwa Duniani (Earthbound Spirits)

Pepo aliyefungiwa duniani (Earthbound spirit)

Earthbound spirits are souls of the dead that are confined to the Earth and cannot leave until completing unfinished business. Many earthbound spirits do not accept that they are dead.  They materialize for a specific reason: to draw attention to something lost, to correct something they did wrong in life or to show the circumstances of their death, and once this matter has been resolved their soul will cross over into the light, usually with the help of a ghost-whisperer or medium (a type of exorcist).

A doppelgänger is a paranormal double of a living person, typically representing evil or misfortune. In some traditions, a doppelgänger seen by the person’s friends or relatives portends illness or danger, whereas seeing one’s own doppelgänger is an omen of death.

In Norse mythology, a twin ghost is called a vardøger. This spirit precedes a living person and is seen performing their actions in advance, and in Finnish it is known as an etiäinen.

Ka

In Ancient Egyptian mythology, a ka was a tangible “spirit double” having the same memories and feelings as the original person.

Watu-samaki (Fishmen)

Mtu-samaki (Fishman)

Fish-men are members of a nearly extinct amphibious race that lived during the Devonian age, capable of breathing both in and out of water. They are vulnerable to rotenone and bright light (due to their murky water habitat), have webbed hands with sharp claws and tough scaly greenish-blue skin, that with their combined healing factor allows them to survive wounds which would be fatal to humans, such as gunshots and full immolation. These creatures have a dormant set of lungs, in case their gills become irreparably damaged. 35% of fish-people’s blood is composed of white corpuscles lacking a nucleus.

Kiumbe kutoka Wangwa Mweusi (The Creature from the Black Lagoon)

The creature from the black lagoon was the last known surviving member of this race of humanoid amphibians. The gill-man, discovered and named by Dr. Thompson in the 1930s, dwelled in a lagoon located in a largely-unexplored area of the Amazon Rainforest. Almost half a century later, the rainforest natives claimed to have seen another fish-man with large amber-colored dorsal fins inhabiting the murky waters.
